Larger than life
Jon Hair’s sculptures are monumental

As a student at Ohio State University in the early 1970s, Jon Hair was listening to a Moody Blues record with two blind friends when they asked him to describe the album cover. His word-picture did little to satisfy them.

So Hair went to art class, created a relief sculpture depicting the cover and presented it to his friends.“Wow!” he recalls one of them saying as he ran his fingers across the sculpture. “Now I can see it. ”Forty years later, the Cornelius sculptor still loves making people say, “Wow!”

Custom staircases take you to the next level

Inside a 12,000-square-foot warehouse in Matthews, about a dozen workers combine their individual expertise and skills to create unique and functional works of art. Using white oak and poplar, as well as more exotic woods, including Brazilian cherry, walnut and maple, these craftsmen piece together specialized, handcrafted, custom staircases, many of which can be found in some of Lake Norman’s most luxurious homes, including those of star athletes and NASCAR drivers.

Stain master
How to treat a concrete floor

If you’re torn between hardwoods and tile, there’s another flooring option you might want to consider: chemically stained concrete floors. Contrary to popular belief, there is no paint involved in this process, also known as acid staining. The color comes from a chemical reaction. Although it sounds like a science experiment, the result is a unique, low-maintenance floor that is sure to turn heads at your next party.

Homes tour benefits the new Denver YMCA

Sitting on the top of a hill and hidden by an established grove of oak trees is a stately and historic home that serves as a lasting testament to the beauty and elegance of an earlier period in Lincoln County. With 30-foot Ionic brick columns and a pedimented portico, Ingleside is not only a piece of Piedmont history, but it is also one of North Carolina’s finest Federal-era mansions.

Modular homes go upscale

When it came time for Errol Eley of Denver to choose a builder for his retirement home on Lake Norman, he made an unconventional choice. A retired excavator from Ohio, he had purchased the land 10 years before and had given it much thought. He and his wife, Cathy, wanted a well-built house that would complement their sloping lakefront lot. They also knew that quality construction, attention to detail, timeliness and cost savings were important considerations. Rather than select a conventional builder and have the house built on the site, the Eleys chose a modular from R-Anell Homes and began enjoying their home in a fraction of the time traditional construction takes.

Escape to solitude
Beach is personal paradise in winter

If your schedule is flexible or you are very lucky, you can hit the beach when the temperature isn’t brutally hot and the wind isn’t blowing a gale force. Winter can be a treasured time at the beach. Granted, some of the motels, restaurants and shops are closed until warmer weather and the crowds return, but plenty stay open all winter. And many hotels and motels offer discounted winter rates.

R. B. Stone’s travels influnece his work

Musician R.B. Stone arrived in Mooresville earlier this year via Indiana – and Ohio, Colorado, California and about 10 other states that he’s at one time called home. His wanderlust and myriad experiences greatly influenced and shaped his Americana style of music – a mix of Southern rock, folk, country and blues. You can see him perform this month at Brazas in Mooresville and Harvey’s in Huntersville.

Restaurant X markss the spot

When world travelers Chris and Christina Phillips opened Restaurant X in Davidson about a year ago, it was the culmination of several dreams. They wanted to put what they had learned about various cuisines into play in their own restaurant, and they wanted to get away from the frenetic pace of New York City. Christina adds, smiling, “X marks the spot.”

Speaking of the lake…

I envy anyone who is organized enough to assemble meals in large quantities to prepare later. I’ve tried it once or twice, and I’ve done the make-it-and-take-it route in area shops. The results were terrific, but for me, getting that organized at home is a stretch.

So I’m impressed with the month’s featured cooks, who get together once a week prepare three entrees, plus side dishes, that they can cook later for their families. (And wouldn’t it be nice to have a number of dishes waiting in the freezer when friends and relatives arrive during the holidays?)
