Bodybuilder excels in 1st attempt
Jason Carr, a Mooresville bodybuilder, has won his weight class in his first contest.
A former Lake Norman High School football player, he was the Wildcats’ team captain and MVP in his junior and senior years. But in his last game as a senior, he reached forward with the football to make a first down and dislocated a shoulder. Surgery followed and sidelined his dreams of playing football at Wingate College, and in the pros.
He endured months of rehabilitation and turned to weightlifting.
This past May, he began to train for the Carolina Clash. Carr, a junior at UNC Charlotte, entered the Men’s Open category, and won first place.
Davidson writer releases book
Davidson resident Tony Brown is the author of the recently released book, “A Happy Guide to a Short Life – A Response to Ms Quindlen’s Fine Book.”
In his book, Tony Brown responds to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anna Quindlen’s popular publication, “A Short Guide to a Happy Life.” Brown’s challenge to Quindlen’s 2000 essay is a debate between a best-selling novelist and a middle-age father, who are trying to make sense of the world.
The soft-cover book was printed by Acme Bookbinding, Charlestown, Mass., and is available at www.HappyGuidetoaShortLife.com and www.Amazon.com. All of the author’s proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Community Foundation.
Davidson resident receives Community Builder Award
The Lake Norman YMCA has given Davidson resident Ruby Houston its inaugural Community Builder Award. The award recognizes individuals who have made longstanding contributions to the community but may not be intimately involved with the YMCA.
Community Builder Award recipients will have the opportunity to select one family in their community to receive one week of YMCA camp scholarships.
Houston hails from a long tradition of women who have enhanced the lives of
those in their community. She earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in human development and learning from Barber-Scotia College, and is the community relations and outreach coordinator for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Houston is involved with numerous agencies and organizations, including the Lake Norman Community Development Council, Exceptional Children Assistance Center,
Ada Jenkins Center, local YMCAs, Davidson Presbyterian Church and other faith houses.
Nicholls receives Burney Award
Scotty Nicholls of Davidson has received the town’s G. Jackson Burney Community Service Award for 2007.
Nicholls, a longtime community volunteer, is best known for her acting with the Davidson Community Players productions and the Tarradiddle Players. She also has been active in many community organizations.
She came to Davidson in 1963 with her husband, Peter, where they raised their four children and were employed by Davidson College, she as its housing director.
The award is named for G. Jackson Burney, who served the town in many capacities, primarily in planning and communications.
The award also includes a contribution by the town to a local charity chosen by the award recipient. Nicholls has chosen the Davidson Lands Conservancy.
