Stone’s travels influence his work

Musician R.B. Stone arrived in Mooresville earlier this year via Indiana – and Ohio, Colorado, California and about 10 other states that he’s at one time called home. His wanderlust and myriad experiences greatly influenced and shaped his Americana style of music – a mix of Southern rock, folk, country and blues. You can see him perform this month at Brazas in Mooresville and Harvey’s in Huntersville.

Stone was born in Indiana and grew up in Ohio, where he started to dabble in music. As a kid he played his mother’s piano and later took up the drums in high school. “I didn’t start playing professionally until I was 24,” Stone says. “I had to hitchhike eight miles to my first gig.”

Looking for something a little more steady and reliable, Stone eventually got into retail management while living in Ohio. But after a few years he realized it wasn’t for him. “I loaded up everything and moved to Colorado and learned how to be a cowboy,” he says. During the day Stone learned how to break horses, and at night he practiced playing his guitar. He eventually landed a job at one of the local outfitters, where he wrangled horses during pack trips and performed for guests around the campfire. As his confidence grew, Stone started playing at small bars around Colorado, which marked the beginning of his musical and personal journey. In the ensuing years he traveled around the country, and worked a variety of jobs, including truck driver and railroad laborer. He even earned a commercial pilot’s license. But performing and recording music remained his true passion, and he toured in 31 countries and recorded nearly a dozen albums on his own private label.

While sitting in with the Marshall Tucker Band at a gig in Las Vegas, Stone met some pilots who worked for NASCAR, who told him about all the great places to perform music around the Lake Norman area. So once again Stone packed up all his stuff and moved, arriving in Mooresville in April. While Stone says he’s focusing on playing more shows around the Lake Norman region, he still enjoys hitting the road from time to time and, in fact, has several gigs in Las Vegas next year. “I’m gearing up for the second half of my career,” he says. “I’ve seen a lot of the world but still want to see more and do more.”

Stone just released his 12th album, Acoustic Stew, and is scheduled to play Harvey’s on Dec. 15 and Brazas on Dec. 1, 8, 22 and 29. For more information check out www.myspace.com/rbstonemusic.
