Roar of freedom
Rolling Thunder keeps focus on veterans issues
Statesville’s William DeVaughan and Mike Keller are military veterans who continue to serve. As members of Rolling Thunder, their mission on Independence Day, as it is on every other day of the year, is to draw attention to the issues surrounding prisoners of war and soldiers classified as missing in action and to honor all those who have served our country.

State Parks
Climbers, hikers, anglers drawn to Stone Mountain
After an exhilarating hike along a winding, heavily forested trail, we stopped at the peak of a towering granite dome. As we admired the view and devoured peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, some unexpected visitors showed up. A trio of wild goats, moving with nimble ease across the sloping rock, made their way toward us, boldly nosed around our little picnic, and then just as abruptly continued on. Such a unique encounter is just one reason why Stone Mountain, located a little more than 60 miles from Lake Norman, is worth a visit.

Family retreat holds precious memories
It may not be the biggest, the trendiest or the most lavishly decorated house on Lake Norman, but the Tate family house in Cornelius’ Island Forest neighborhood is incredibly rich in memories stored up during 35 years of family gatherings.

Sound adds new dimension to outdoor living
The kitchen has moved to the patio. The deck looks like a casual living room. There’s a fireplace, a ceiling fan and even a waterproof television outside. Perhaps the only missing element is the kind of sound an indoor system delivers.

Trans-Atlantic recipes
Favorite dishes from Liberia, Nigeria
West African cooks keep it simple. They learn at a young age to cook instinctively, without cookbooks, using fresh fruit and vegetables. Now neighbors in the Forestview community off I-77, exit 18, continue to use recipes from their homelands.

Air assault
Jackson Davis soars on skateboard
The wide smile across Jackson Davis’ face is split by his tongue, complementing the concentration in his eyes when he drops the nose of his skateboard into the quarter-pipe ramp. His face reflects both this 13-year-old skateboarder’s absolute enjoyment of being on his board and his personal desire to nail the trick every time.

Marina Profile
Mountain Creek is respite from main channel
Tucked back in a cove beyond the slanting bridge in Sherrills Ford, there is a small, family-owned marina that offers boaters a place to dock in a peaceful setting, far from the crowds of Lake Norman’s main channel.

Carter Brothers are back home
When the Carter Brothers take the stage, you realize this isn’t your parents’ version of bluegrass music – and that’s what the group intends.
Tim and Danny Carter, the brothers behind the Carter Brothers Band, grew up in Jamestown, N.C., before settling in Nashville, Tenn. Their musical style still has deep Appalachian folk music roots, but they’ve just changed it to fit their modern preferences that include electric instruments.

Sample the variety at Lake Town Tavern
Although Lake Town Tavern opened only last December, it has the comfortable feel of a place that’s been around a while. Maybe that’s because owners Sean and Tanya Wheatland bring a wealth of experience to this venture. Before landing at Lake Norman, Sean worked in the restaurant industry in New Orleans, Dallas and Miami. He was attracted to this area because of the growth, plus he wanted to be near the water, where he says, “People have a more happy groove.”

Dance your way to better health
If you find it hard to stay with an exercise program, you can dance for health.
Dancing, like walking or jogging, can provide the body with many benefits. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have found that dancing helps to reduce stress, improve muscle tone and coordination, and increase energy. Plus, it can burn as many calories as walking or riding a bike. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute says advantages of dance include weight loss, lower blood pressure, decreased risk for coronary heart disease and the prevention or slowing of osteoporosis.

Organizations help families make each day count
We don’t get to choose how we come into this world, but hopefully we can have a say so as to how we leave it. Although the end-of-life issue is never easy to face, we all know that it’s something we will have to address at some point in our lives. The good news is that there are organizations in the Lake Norman area designed to help make such times a little less trying.

Recovery brief after surgery
Just one night in the hospital was all Brenda Newman, 44, school nurse at Cannon School, needed before heading home after having a hysterectomy at Carolinas Medical Center-University earlier this year. With small bandages covering just a few very small incisions (less than one-half inch in length) and some over-the-counter ibuprofen to help with pain, Brenda resumed normal activities at home with a few days and was washing windows within two weeks.

Speaking of the lake…
The English language is a wonderful living thing, constantly changing, just as we grow and change. Our tough economy and especially the rising gas prices have given us a new word: staycation. Instead of going on vacation, have a staycation near home.
