Alter ego was mrs. Santa
Mrs. Santa Claus and I are sisters under the skin. We have a lot in common. We both have white hair. We both wear glasses. We both like the sound of jingling bells. We both worried about our husbands being too fat. Each of us was concerned when our guys went out of town on long trips. She is inclined to wear bright colors and has a closet full of red dresses. I, on the other hand, prefer more muted tones. Done up in red, I look like a fire engine.

Stretch the season

Look up for the sky's nighttime show
On a clear and dark October evening in 1957, 9-year-old Ralph Deal stood with his brothers and sisters on his family’s lawn in Mooresville and, at the urging of their parents, focused his attention on the sky. Somewhere in the maze of stars, planets, constellations and galaxies, he hoped to catch a glimpse of Sputnik I, the world’s first artificial satellite, launched by the Soviet Union on Oct. 4, as it passed overhead.

Vintage trim enhances ornaments
Crafter gives new look to old Decorations
Ellen White started crafting ornaments not because she didn’t have enough decorations to trim her holiday tree, but because she had so many.

The Mooresville resident, who has a collection of about 2,000 Christopher Radko ornaments and 150 Victorian ornaments, began making one-of-a-kind Victorian-style ornaments from vintage and antique materials two years ago.

Holiday fling
Celtic christmas is energetic celebration
There will be an old-fashioned, foot-stomping holiday concert when the Beggar Boys present “A Celtic Christmas” at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson.

The concert, which will feature traditional music from Ireland, Scotland and England, will showcase the talents of Davidson residents Henry Lebedinsky, who is St. Alban’s organist and choirmaster, and Kate Minogue, who joined the group about a year ago.

Bright idea
Professionals take the angst out of holiday decorating
Although most of us don’t put as many lights on our homes as Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) did in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” we can understand how frustrating holiday illumination can be. Rather than climb on a cold ladder and start hammering light strands into your roof, you might want to hire some of Santa’s elves to decorate the exterior of your house or commercial building.

Secrets for health
You can't see the clean air, but you know it's there
You can’t tell it’s a healthy house just by looking. There’s nothing to see. You can’t smell it, exactly, though most people respond automatically, on some level, to the fresh-washed smell. You might notice that it’s quiet – there isn’t as much furnace or fan noise as you’re accustomed to hearing.

TRAVEL
Down the road and over the top
Just to the south, McAdenville stages its annual display
One of the largest and most spectacular Christmas light shows in the country begins about 30 miles south of Lake Norman just after Thanksgiving. And we’re not talking about a big Fraser fir or fancy house done up in lights and decorations. We’re talking about an entire town adorned with more than 450,000 red, green and white bulbs and a number of other holiday goodies.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
New kind of tradition
Make others part of your circle
The holidays are here. Let the traditions begin! Every family has them: trimming the tree, hanging the lights, settling in for large family dinners, giving gifts, returning gifts.

When I was growing up, my family always exchanged gifts on Christmas Eve, then my two brothers and I waited eagerly for Santa to bring his gifts, unwrapped and displayed lovingly throughout the living room and under the tree. My fondest memories are of those Christmas mornings when our seldom-used living room was transformed into a magic toyland by the one and only Santa Claus.
